Ingredients

– Ground allspice

– All-purpose or bread flour

– Raisins or currants

– Confectioners’ sugar

– Fresh or bottled orange juice

– Milk with vanilla extract

Instructions

1-Activate the yeast by mixing it with warm milk and a teaspoon of sugar; let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

2-In a large bowl, combine flour, remaining sugar, and cinnamon; mix thoroughly.

3-Add the softened butter, egg, and the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients; knead the dough until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes.

4-Fold in the mixed dried fruit evenly throughout the dough.

5-Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

6-Divide the dough into equal portions and form round buns; place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.

7-Create the iconic cross on each bun with a simple paste made of flour and water.

8-Allow the shaped buns to proof for another 30-45 minutes.

9-Bake at 200Β°C (392Β°F) for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.

10-Brush the hot cross buns with a sugar glaze while still warm; cool on a rack and serve. Adaptations for vegan or gluten-free diets include using the specified ingredient substitutes in the initial steps.
