🍒 Tangy-sweet homemade cranberry sauce with orange brightness – far better than canned for Thanksgiving turkey!
🧡 Quick stovetop simmer, make-ahead chills perfectly, customizable with spices for holiday perfection!

  • Total Time: 2 hours 20 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

– â…” cup sugar

– â…“ cup light brown sugar (tightly packed)

– â…“ cup water

– â…” cup orange juice

– 12 oz cranberries (rinsed and sorted)

Instructions

1-First Step: Gather and Prepare Your Ingredients Before you turn on the stove, take five minutes to get everything ready. Measure out your sugars remember to pack that brown sugar tightly into your measuring cup. Pour your water and orange juice into measuring cups. Most importantly, rinse your cranberries in a colander and sort through them, removing any that look questionable. This prep work makes the actual cooking process smooth and stress-free.

2-Second Step: Create the Sweet Base Place a medium saucepan on your stovetop and turn the heat to medium. Pour in your ⅔ cup sugar, ⅓ cup packed light brown sugar, ⅓ cup water, and ⅔ cup orange juice. Stir gently with a wooden spoon or heat-safe spatula as the mixture heats up. You’ll feel the sugars dissolving as you stir this should take about two to three minutes. The mixture will start looking clear rather than grainy when the sugars have fully dissolved.

3-Third Step: Bring to a Boil Once your sugars have dissolved completely, increase the heat slightly to bring the liquid to a boil. You want to see bubbles breaking across the surface. This step typically takes another two to three minutes depending on your stove. Watch carefully so it doesn’t boil over you want a gentle, rolling boil, not a volcanic eruption on your stovetop!

4-Fourth Step: Add the Cranberries Now comes the satisfying part! Pour your sorted cranberries into the boiling liquid. They’ll float at first, and the mixture will come off the boil temporarily that’s perfectly normal. Give everything a gentle stir to coat the berries in that sweet orange-sugar liquid. The cranberries will start making a gentle popping sound as they heat up, which is exactly what you want to hear.

5-Fifth Step: Return to a Boil Bring the mixture back to a boil. You’ll notice the cranberries starting to burst open and release their color into the sauce. The whole mixture transforms from pale orange to that gorgeous deep ruby color that makes homemade cranberry sauce so visually striking on the table.

6-Sixth Step: Simmer and Watch the Magic Reduce your heat to low or medium-low you want a gentle simmer, not aggressive bubbling. Let the sauce cook for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally with your wooden spoon. You’ll hear the cranberries popping as they burst, which releases their natural pectin. This pectin is what thickens your sauce and gives it that perfect consistency. During this simmering time, most of your berries will burst open. If a few remain whole, that’s actually lovely for texture don’t worry about smashing every single one. The sauce will start coating the back of your spoon when it’s ready. Keep in mind it thickens considerably as it cools, so don’t worry if it seems a bit thin when hot.

7-Seventh Step: Cool and Set Remove your saucepan from the heat and let the cranberry sauce recipe cool in the pan for about five minutes. Then transfer it to a serving bowl or storage container. Let it cool at room temperature for at least 20 minutes before covering. Once it reaches room temperature, cover and refrigerate for at least two hours before serving. This chilling time allows the sauce to set properly and develop its full flavor.
