  • Total Time: 1 hour 25 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 batch of homemade cornbread

6 slices of white bread

1 tablespoon of olive oil

1/2 teaspoon poultry seasoning

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup of salted butter

1 diced yellow onion

1 diced green bell pepper

3 ribs of diced celery

3/4 teaspoon salt (divided)

2 1/2 teaspoons poultry seasoning (divided)

1/2 teaspoon dried sage

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper

4.5 cups of chicken broth

2 large beaten eggs

Instructions

1-First, preheat your oven to 350°F and get your cornbread ready by crumbling 1 batch into a large bowl. Also, take 6 slices of white bread, crumble them into small pieces, and toss them with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon poultry seasoning, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Toast this in the oven for 15 minutes until it’s nice and crisp.

2-While that’s toasting, melt 1/2 cup of salted butter in a skillet and sauté 1 diced yellow onion, 1 diced green bell pepper, and 3 ribs of diced celery for about 5 minutes until they soften. In a big bowl, mix the toasted bread crumbs with the sautéed veggies and the melted butter.

3-Adding Flavors and Mixing It Up: Now, stir in 3/4 teaspoon salt (divided), 2 1/2 teaspoons poultry seasoning (divided), 1/2 teaspoon dried sage, 1/2 teaspoon onion powder, and 1/2 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper. To make it just right, pour in 4.5 cups of chicken broth in two parts, stirring as you go to keep everything even. Then, mix in 2 large beaten eggs to bind it all together.

4-Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13 inch baking dish and bake for 50 minutes until it’s golden on top. Let it cool a bit before serving warm it’s best that way for that classic southern dressing feel.
