🍫 This Chocolate Buttercream Frosting is a luscious addition that brings creamy, rich chocolate flavor to your baked goods.
🎂 Perfect for cakes and cupcakes, this frosting is quick to prepare and excellent for detailed piping and decorations.

  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: Frosting for one medium-sized cake or 12-18 cupcakes 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 cup (16 tablespoons; 226 g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature (cool to the touch but not melted)

3 to cups (360 to 420 g) confectioners’ sugar (powdered sugar), measured before sifting

½ cup (41 to 84 g) unsweetened natural or Dutch-process cocoa powder

3 to 4 tablespoons (45 to 60 ml) heavy cream or milk, at room temperature (more can be added to adjust consistency)

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon salt (fine sea salt preferred)

Instructions

1- Gather all ingredients and ensure the unsalted butter is softened to room temperature but not melted, for smooth blending.

2- Sift the confectioners’ sugar and unsweetened cocoa powder together to avoid lumps, enhancing the frosting’s texture.

3- Using an electric mixer fitted with a paddle or whisk attachment, beat the softened butter on medium speed for 2 to 3 minutes until creamy and light in color. Scrape down the bowl as needed.

4- Gradually add the sifted sugar and cocoa powder mixture to the butter, mixing on low speed initially to reduce dust, then increase to medium-high and beat for 1 to 3 minutes until fluffy.

5- Add pure vanilla extract, 3 tablespoons of heavy cream or milk, and salt. Continue beating on high speed to combine thoroughly and achieve a smooth, spreadable consistency.

6- Adjust texture by adding more powdered sugar to thicken or additional cream/milk to thin out the frosting, blending well after each adjustment.

7- For vegan or dietary variations, substitute butter and dairy with plant-based alternatives during mixing while maintaining the sequence.

8- Use frosting immediately to decorate cakes, cupcakes, or cookies. For later use, cover tightly and store in an airtight container.

9- If refrigerated, bring frosting to room temperature and re-whip before use for ideal creaminess and texture.

Notes

🧈 Butter should be softened, not melted, for best texture.
🥄 Scrape down the bowl several times during mixing to ensure even incorporation of ingredients.
🍩 Use either natural or Dutch-process cocoa for the best flavor and color. Adjust with black cocoa or gel food coloring for a darker color.
