🥞 Discover a classic British snack with these delicious oat bars, perfect for on-the-go energy.
🍯 Flapjacks offer a simple, homemade treat with a comforting caramel flavor and satisfying chew.

  • Total Time: 40-50 minutes
  • Yield: 12 bars 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1/2 cup (1 stick, about 113 grams) unsalted or salted butter, cubed
1/2 cup (packed, about 100 grams) brown sugar or demerara sugar
5 tablespoons (approximately 75 ml) golden syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
2 1/3 cups (about 210 grams) quick-cooking oats
Pinch of salt (about 1/4 teaspoon), optional

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (163°C) without convection. Grease and line an 8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper.
2. In a medium saucepan over medium-low heat, melt the butter. Add brown sugar, golden syrup, vanilla extract, and salt, stirring constantly until smooth and without visible melted butter.
3. Remove from heat and stir in oats, mixing thoroughly to coat.
4. Press the mixture evenly into the prepared pan. Bake for 20 minutes for chewy flapjacks, or about 30 minutes for a crispier texture.
5. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes before cutting into bars. Let cool completely on a wire rack.

Notes

🧂 Use quick-cooking oats for the best texture; adjust oats and syrup if using rolled oats.
🍬 Golden syrup is key for that butterscotch flavor; substitutes might alter taste.
🔥 Prevent a greasy texture by melting butter and sugar slowly over low heat.
